Thanks.

I'll look through the freezer tonight and make some hard choices. I know I'm not throwing away that unopened pound of Amarillo, but I'll probably use it for aroma. The rest of the previously opened packages should probably get the boot, I suppose.

Assuming I don't keep much else, I'll probably order a pound of Cascade for the stable bittering of APA with the Amarillo, and a pound of Crystal to use for my Dotted Cows.

For bittering I would just hope with magnum, Apollo or Bravo.

Check those amarillo, there was a bad year around 2014.

Well against all good sense I went ahead and placed the order for a pound of cascade and a pound of magnum.

sour grapes?

I have had bad experiences with both, but I can't say anything directly about the two as supplied by him, hopefully they aren't what they used to be

the us hallertau had an interesting fruitiness that faded relatively quickly and then seemed more like traditional hallertau.  or maybe it was the dry lager yeast doing that?  I'll know with more confidence when I do my next run of lagers and use some more of those hops.

Two favorites. Magnum has become my go to for initial neutral bittering so all my finishing hops can be displayed as it should be. I need to get some magnums.

I wasn't going to do it because I'd rather have the storage space than save $18 a year on hops. But my LHBS has almost nothing for whole hops, and my system really does need them to function correctly.

Can you elaborate on the system and why pellets won't work?

to me it was rougher, less refined than the German, when making otherwise identical Pils batches, and the US Saaz had a somewhat Clusterish aromatic to it

this was many years ago though, the varietals may have been improved upon since then, I really like some of the other US Hallertaur types

I like those.  Have a German pils made with US Hallertauer that's great.

Not to mention that terroir has a huge effect.

I need roughly half of my hops to be whole or the kettle doesn't drain well.

The heating element interferes with forming the stuff in the center.

Strange, I get a good cone of pellets in the middle but I do use a side pickup.

I use a side pickup also, but I don't worry about the trub.  It just goes through my pump and into the fermenter.  A couple tests have found that beer fermented with trub in it is clearer and preferred by tasters.  It certainly doesn't hurt.
