I want to brew a lager this friday so I'm limited to white labs products because they are local.

I've only used 838 and 830 (I think).  Is there another commonly available strain I should be trying out if I can get it?  I'm looking at making a helles and then some kind of darker lager after with the same yeast.

Morty, either of those yeasts will be excellent for the beers you're looking to make.

Not sure about other WL strains, but if you could get either 838 or 830, you will not be disappointed.

830, 940 and 802 if you want to sneak a Czech beer in there. 830 and 940 are extremely versatile.

that 802 yeast sounded interesting but I don't have much in the way of saaz.  could I use hallertau or mt. hood and make good beer?  I'm not a real stickler for style as long as the beer is good.

Yes, of course... use whatever hops you see working the best or whichever are the freshest. The 802 is the Budojovice yeast and it's really, really nice all the way around. It's got a great Czech character and any GOLD LAGER that you make would turn out really nice with it. You could also make a dark lager/dunkel/whatever-Chils-calls-a dark-Czech-beer kind of beer. I haven't used 802 in awhile but it's a very nice strain of yeast.

Thought you used 833 for your Helles. I really not sure I like 838, a bit too malty.

you are correct!  my mistake.

and the other recent lager yeast I used was 2124 - maybe that is equivalent to 830?

830 and 2124 are definitely not the same strain. Similar yes but not the same. The stats for attenuation, flocculation, temp range, etc. don't line up either.
